Cloth Diaper Wipes
Cloth diaper wipes are a major time and money saver if you use cloth diapers. The average family will spend over $400 on disposable wipes in two years (with just one child in diapers). Cloth wipes, on the other hand, can cost as little as $20-40 and will last for years. Even after your child outgrows diapers, you can reuse cloth wipes as rags until they wear out.
Cloth diaper wipes are a major time saver if you cloth diaper, since sorting out used disposable wipes is a royal pain in the tuchas. I have had a few disposable wipes make it into our washer and dryer with the cloth wipes (this was before I convinced Grandma that cloth wipes are better). The wipes ended up in shreds all over the hook and loop tabs on our diapers. Ugh!
When you are using cloth diapers anyway, the cloth wipes are so convenient since they are washed right along with the cloth diapers. Simple and easy, that’s what I look for in any parenting product! Even when we are away from home for the day, I pack a big stack of cloth wipes. We use them one set just for hands, faces and little noses. The other set is used for diapers. We have all pink wipes for hands and faces, all other colors for bottom wipes. That makes it easy to tell where each wipe belongs and we don’t mix them up.
Cloth diaper wipes can be used with simple warm water or with a cloth diaper wipe solution. There are several commercial cloth diaper wipe solutions available, or you can make your own with a simple recipe.
One major benefit to using cloth diaper wipes is that you are in complete control over what touches your baby’s skin. Disposable diaper wipes contain a number of chemicals that can cause allergies or worsen diaper rash.
According to the Mayo clinic, diaper rashes can be caused by disposable wipes, disposable diapers, or additives used in washing cloth diapers, among other things. The treatment they suggest? Keeping the baby’s bottom as clean and dry as possible. You can read more about diaper rash causes and treatments on the Mayo clinic diaper rash page. One easy way to keep baby’s bottom clean and dry is to carefully and gently wash their bottom at every diaper change with clean, warm water, then pat their bottom dry with a cloth wipe. Be sure to just pat, as rubbing can irritate diaper rash.
Cloth diaper wipes are available in many different fabrics and prints. You can find them in bamboo velour (so soft!), hemp, cotton and other materials. The simplest and most popular though, are simple flannel wipes that are just the right size for washing little bums. Because the cotton flannel is soft and absorbent, it is perfect for gently drying tender skin.
Some popular brands of cloth diaper wipes include Thirsties fleece and cotton velour wipes, Happy Heiny’s hemp wipes, and Little for Now flannel or bamboo wipes.
No matter which cloth diaper wipes you choose, you can save a lot of money and hassle by switching to cloth wipes.
